MAYOR GIULIANI ADDRESSES INSURANCE COMPANY PROFESSIONALS AT 51ST ANNUAL CHARTERED PROPERTY AND CASUALTY UNDERWRITERS NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today addressed insurance company agents, brokers, risk managers, regulators and other professionals at the 51st Annual Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters National Conference at the Marriott Marquis. Joining the Mayor were Roger Smith, President of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society (CPCU); Cynthia Ziegler, Senior Vice President of CPCU.; George Gottheimer, Conference Host and Chapter Chairman of CPCU; and Tom Brokaw, Anchor of NBC News.

"It is a pleasure to join all of you here today for the 51st Annual Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters Conference," Mayor Giuliani said. "As a group dedicated to upholding the ethical, educational and professional standards of the insurance industry's underwriters, the C.P.C.U. is critical to our City and to the entire nation."

Mayor Giuliani said, "The fact is that New York City is the world leader in areas from business to finance to the media, entertainment and the arts. And insurance is no exception. Six of the nation's top insurers are headquartered right here. The industry employs 78,000 people, making it responsible for almost three percent of our City's total private-sector employment. And the combined assets of the City's top ten insurers is $1.9 trillion.

"CPCU's work helps the insurance industry by strengthening the corps of professional underwriters who set the rates -- and who are responsible for protecting both the profits of the carriers, and the fair and equitable treatment of the policy holders," said Mayor Giuliani. "This annual conference is an important component of the Society's contribution."

The Mayor concluded, "I would like to thank the CPCU for choosing New York to host this very important event. And while I know that the business of the conference is enough to keep all of you busy during your stay, I sincerely hope that you will take the time to enjoy some of the many attractions that have made New York the number one tourist destination in the world."

The CPCU Society is a not-for-profit association founded in 1944 to promote professionalism, continuing education, research, and high ethical standards in insurance and risk management. Today more than 4,000 CPCUs in more than 15 chapters across the United States are members of the Society. The Society's diverse membership includes insurance agents or brokers, risk managers, regulators, professors, journalists, attorneys, and more.
