MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS OFFICIAL ISRAEL-NORTH AMERICA BUSINESS CONFERENCE RECEPTION
First Annual Conference Set for October 8-10

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani attended an official reception tonight in honor of the First Annual Israel-North America Business Conference being held this year in New York City on October 8-10 at the Sheraton New York.

The Mayor joined officials at the reception including: Minister of National Infrastructure Ariel Sharon; Consul General of Israel Colette Avital; Mayor of Jerusalem Ehud Olmert; Minister of Transportation Yitzhak Levy; Minister of Communications Limor Livnat; and Chief Scientist/Director General of Industry & Trade Shuki Gleitman. Also present were international business leaders, Isareli dignitaries, elected officials, and other distinguished guests.

"It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to our City for the official beginning of the First North America - Israel Business Conference," said Mayor Giuliani. "And I say first, because our hope is that this conference will become an annual event -- further strengthening economic relations between Israel and the United States."

"And it seems fitting that New York City has been chosen as the site for this conference," the Mayor continued. "New York is the Capital of the World. We are a national leader in areas from finance to communications to infrastructure construction and planning. And we are also the largest and one of the world's greatest Jewish cities, with a long and proud tradition of kinship and solidarity with the Israeli State."

"Several months ago, when I met with Prime Minister Netanyahu, he asked about the successes we have experienced in New York City," said the Mayor. "At that time, and since then, Prime Minister Netanyahu has emphasized the point that one of the cornerstone principles of his administration is private sector development, and improving the business climate in Israel.

"In 1994 at a City Hall ceremony, Mayor Olmert and I signed an economic cooperation agreement between New York City and Jerusalem. A year later, Mayor Roni Milo of Tel Aviv and I signed a similar agreement. In a sense, this reception and this conference is an outgrowth of those agreements, and I will do everything in my power to continue to strengthen the relationship between this city and the great city's of Israel.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I would like to welcome all of the conferees to our city, and especially those who have come here from throughout the United States, Israel and Europe. I wish all a very successful conference, both in terms of making valuable business connections in New York, and also in having a wonderful time during your stay in our City," the Mayor concluded.

The Israel - North America Business Conference is designed to provide Israeli and American business leaders and executives an opportunity to discuss the emerging markets in Israel. CEOs and other top level executives from Israel's top companies, including Bezeq, the Israel Electric Corporation, Motorola Israel, Bank Leumi, the Israel Airport Authority, Coca-Cola Israel, and many others will be available to meet with US executives for the express purpose of doing business here in New York and across the United States.
