WEEKLY UPDATE ON MURDERS AND SHOOTINGS IN NEW YORK CITY

In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of murders and the lowest number of shootings at any time since comparable records were kept, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update will be provided every week by the Mayor’s Office.

Murders

Through Sunday, September 1st, New York City has seen 75 fewer murders than at this point last year: 224 murders in 2013 compared to 299 murders in 2012 - a decrease of 25.1 percent.

Murders committed with firearms represent 129 of the 224 murders in 2013, 57.6 percent.

Through Sunday, September 1st, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 52 from last year: 129 in 2013 compared to 181 in 2012 - a decrease of 28.7 percent.

Shootings

As of Sunday, September 1st, New York City has seen 250 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 740 shootings in 2013 compared to 990 shootings in 2012 - a decrease of 25.3 percent.
