WEEKLY UPDATE ON MURDERS AND SHOOTINGS IN NEW YORK CITY

In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of recorded murders and lowest number of recorded shootings in city history, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update will be provided every week by the Mayor’s Office.

Murders

Through Sunday, August 25th, New York City has seen 77 fewer murders than at this point last year: 213 murders in 2013 compared to 290 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 26.6 percent.

Murders committed with firearms represent 123 of the 213 murders in 2013, 58 percent.

Through Sunday, August 25th, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 52 from last year: 123 in 2013 compared to 175 in 2012 – a decrease of 29.7 percent.

Shootings

As of Sunday, August 25th, New York City has seen 249 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 708 shootings in 2013 compared to 957 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 26.0 percent.
