STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON SUPREME COURT DECISION ON THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT

Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Quinn Filed a Joint Amicus Brief in Support of Constitutional Challenge to the Federal Defense of Marriage Act, Available Here

“Generation after generation has removed barriers to full participation in the American dream, with each generation helping our country take another step on the road to a more perfect union for all citizens. The Supreme Court’s decision today brings us another step forward in the march of freedom, a journey we must never stop traveling.

“I’m honored to be a part of Mayors for Freedom to Marry, a coalition committed to advancing the American journey towards full equality in every state. Those who still stand in opposition should remember that on matters of freedom and equality, history has not remembered obstructionists kindly – not on abolition, women’s suffrage, workers’ rights or civil rights. The same will be true on marriage equality. The desire for equal standing has led to extraordinary advances in American freedom – it has never been defeated, and on marriage equality, it will not be defeated.”
