STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE DEATH OF FORMER NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR FRANK MACCHIAROLA

“Frank Macchiarola dedicated his life to the people of our city, and generations of children and adults benefitted enormously from his passion for public service. Frank’s intellect was matched only by his integrity, and he was the rare person who was as comfortable in the clubby world of academia as he was in the rough-and-tumble world of politics. He excelled at both, and our city is better for it. His tenure as schools chancellor under Mayor Koch proved that bold reforms were possible and helped set the stage for the work we’ve done over the past decade. As mayor, I called on Frank a number of times to volunteer his time and talents; he helped us settle a Broadway musicians’ strike, and he led a Charter Revision Commission that proposed political reforms that were strongly opposed by special interests. But Frank was always ahead of his time, and he was never afraid to stand up for the ideas and people he believed in. Our city will miss his fighting spirit; his slogan in his 1989 campaign for comptroller was ‘The Fighting Professor.’ Frank fought the good fight all his life – and on behalf of our city, I want to extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Mary, their sons Joseph, Michael, and Frank, and their entire family. My thoughts and prayers are with them.”
