MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND COMMISSIONER BENEPE ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF PARKS DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE JEFFREY BARBIERI

Statement of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

“The loss of Parks Department worker Jeffrey Barbieri is sad news for our Parks Department and all New Yorkers who love our parks. Jeff collapsed while working on the 9/11 Memorial in Tribute Park, Queens and he was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where he passed away. For the past three and half years, Jeff ably served the Parks Department and the public as a cement mason, working to build and renovate features of the City’s parks. Jeff died much too soon, and his passing is a terrible reminder that life is all too short. On behalf of all New Yorkers, our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.”

Statement of Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe

“It is with deep regret that we report the death of Parks Department Cement Mason Jeffrey Barbieri. Jeff was working to preserve elements of the 9/11 Memorial in Tribute Park in Rockaway when he suffered a pulmonary embolism. Despite the efforts of EMS and the medical staff at St. John's Hospital, he passed away. Jeff was an organ donor and in accordance with his wishes, his vital organs will help save other lives. We thank Jeff for this selfless act and his service to the City and offer our sympathy and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in the Parks Department.”
