STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON REVISED STATE DATA SHOWING STRENGTH OF NEW YORK CITY'S ECONOMY

“Today’s report is further confirmation that, despite the challenges we face, New York City is leading the nation in terms of economic recovery. We now know that New York City’s economy has exceeded previous estimates, fared better than the country as a whole, and outperformed other cities. New York City added private sector jobs at a rate almost 60 percent greater than the country as a whole in 2011, and over the last two years, New York City created more jobs than the next 10 largest cities combined. We’ve seen signs of strong confidence in New York City all throughout the recovery: a record 50.5 million tourists visited in 2011, world-class companies are choosing to invest and grow here, and our population is rising. Unemployment is still too high and we must do more to make sure that we continue to create quality jobs for all New Yorkers and the jobseekers who are coming here every day.”
