STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON STATE SENATE PASSAGE OF A BILL TO EXPAND THE STATE'S DNA DATABANK

“Today, the State Senate answered Governor Cuomo’s call to modernize the State’s criminal justice laws by expanding DNA collection to more crimes. DNA is today’s equivalent to fingerprints. Prosecutors understand how essential DNA can be to solving crimes – and defense attorneys understand how essential it is to exonerating the innocent and preventing wrongful convictions. Six years ago we helped lead the charge for a new State law that expanded DNA collection, and now the time has come for us to take the next step. I want to thank Senator Saland for sponsoring the bill, and we look forward to working with our partners in the Assembly to pass a bill we can send to the Governor’s desk for his signature.”
