MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION AMENDING REGULATIONS ON BICYCLE STORAGE IN PARKING GARAGES
Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
"The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 720-A, sponsored by Council Members Koslowitz, Lander, Mealy, Van Bramer, Dromm, Rodriguez, Levin, Barron, Gennaro, Greenfield and Koo. Introductory Number 720-A adds flexibility to the current regulations relating to bicycle storage in parking garages.
"Two years ago, the Council approved and I signed Local Law 51, which requires parking garages to provide a certain number of parking spaces for bicycles, based on the vehicle capacity of the garage. Since that time, we have learned that the exact size requirements of the law have been overly burdensome on some business owners, especially for garages where the spaces are not always utilized. Based on these experiences, today we are amending that law to give garage operators the flexibility to safely secure the bikes in their garage in the way that works best for them - all while maintaining the same number of required spaces. These new regulations will ensure that the goals of Local Law 51 are still achieved, while making things a little easier on parking garage operators.
"I would like to thank Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz, Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and their staff for their work on this bill. I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
