STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON STATE SENATE PASSAGE OF BILL TO EXPAND DNA DATABANK TO SOLVE MORE CRIMES

“The value of DNA evidence as a law enforcement tool is indisputable: it helps free innocent people and prevents wrongful convictions, while providing law enforcement with a unique, undeniable piece of evidence to indentify the perpetrator of a crime. Prosecutors from across the state and Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman’s bi-partisan Justice Task Force agree that an expansion of the DNA databank will be a major step forward for the criminal justice system.  I want to thank Senator Stephen Saland, Majority Leader Skelos and the members of the Senate for passing this legislation. I also want to thank Governor Cuomo and Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, who is expanding the use of DNA evidence to help crack cold cases, for their leadership on this issue. We urge the Assembly to follow the Senate’s lead and pass a bill that will help law enforcement protect the innocent and convict the guilty.”
