STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON FEDERAL HIGH SPEED RAIL FUNDING FOR THE NORTHEAST CORRIDOR

Mayor Bloomberg Co-Chairs Building America’s Future, a Bipartisan Coalition Dedicated to Increasing U.S. Investment in Infrastructure, Including High-Speed Rail

“Today’s announcement by Secretary LaHood of $795 million in rail funding for the Northeast Corridor is an important investment in the future of our city’s and nation’s economy. This is a first-step towards something we should have invested in long ago – true high-speed rail along the Northeast Corridor. The region is the largest driver of our economy and home to nation’s major centers of business, government, finance, medicine, entrepreneurship, and education. Unfortunately, Federal rail investments historically have been spread so thin across the country, the impact has been diluted. We need a new approach to spending transportation money – one that’s not dictated by politics, but based on economics. Today’s announcement signals the Administration is moving in the right direction. I want to thank the President and Secretary LaHood for their leadership and we hope the Administration will continue to fund the infrastructure projects across the country that will ensure our nation’s economic growth.”
