STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE SECOND CIRCUIT COURT'S DECISION TO UPHOLD THE LAW REQUIRING ALL CIGARETTES SOLD IN NEW YORK STATE TO HAVE A TAX STAMP

“This decision is an important victory for all New Yorkers. Allowing taxes to be collected on all cigarette sales, including those sold on Indian reservations, should bring as much as half a billion badly-needed tax dollars into the State treasury each year. It will also greatly reduce New York City’s tax losses caused by the bootlegging of unstamped cigarettes. I congratulate those who were instrumental in securing and defending this legislation, including Governor Cuomo, Attorney General Schneiderman, and former Governor Paterson. I urge the Governor to begin enforcing this law immediately.”
