STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON GOVERNOR CHRISTIE'S APPOINTMENT OF CHRIS CERF AS NEW JERSEY COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION

"I want to congratulate Governor Chris Christie for picking a first-rate educational reformer, Chris Cerf, to be New Jersey's education chief.  As a Deputy Chancellor at the New York City Department of Education, Chris played a crucial role in our work to turn around a once-broken school system that had failed generations of students.  His creativity and leadership, and his willingness to tackle the toughest issues head-on by putting the interests of children ahead of the special interests, helped our administration achieve record gains in achievement levels and graduation rates.

"There are many innovative leaders from our Administration who have been selected for jobs in the Obama Administration, and I think it speaks to the depth of our talent, and the nonpartisan nature of our work, that a dynamic leader like Governor Christie would look to New York City to fill this critically important post.  He's made an excellent choice, and I expect Chris Cerf will be just as successful in New Jersey as he was here."
