STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON OBAMA ADMINISTRATION'S APPOINTMENT OF GEORGE FERTITTA TO THE CORPORATION FOR TRAVEL PROMOTION'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Newly Announced 11-Member Board Comprised of Leaders from the Nation’s Travel and Tourism Industry Will Oversee Nation’s First Global Marketing and Promotion Campaign

“President Obama and Commerce Secretary Locke’s focus on the nation’s tourism industry and their creation of the country’s first national tourism board is a smart move for our economy, and I know George Fertitta will be invaluable to the effort. The strength of New York City’s tourism industry is a big reason why New York City has weathered the national economic downturn better than most other cities, and George and his team at NYC & Company have had a lot to do with it. Last year, New York City was the top U.S. destination for the first time in two decades, and this year we are on pace to attract a record-breaking 47.5 million visitors and open more new hotel rooms than ever before. As a result, we have more hospitality jobs today than when the national recession started, and we’re well on our way to achieving our goal of 50 million visitors by 2012. George has helped us get there by creating a world-class marketing organization with offices in 18 countries, and that experience will serve the new national tourism board extremely well.”
