STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON STATE PASSAGE OF NEW BIDDING RULES THAT WILL HELP SPEED CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY'S THIRD WATER TUNNEL

"I want to thank Speaker Silver, Assemblyman Kavanagh and the entire State Assembly for taking a critical step today towards ensuring that the final phases of construction of the Manhattan leg of the City's Third Water Tunnel can be completed as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Today's action by the Assembly follows the State Senate's passage of companion legislation last month, thanks to the efforts of State Senate Democratic Leader Sampson and State Senator Huntley. By enabling the City to bid out the project's construction work and utility street work together - giving the City control over the entire scope of work - we can simplify and streamline one piece of an immensely complex project. I'd also like to thank Con Edison, Verizon, the Building and Construction Trades Council and the General Contractors Association for their support of this much-needed legislation, which will shave years off of the construction timeline for the Manhattan leg of the tunnel. The Third Water Tunnel is one of the most important capital projects in the City's history and our Administration has dedicated more funding towards the project than the last five administrations combined, reflecting our commitment to protecting the City's world renowned water system. We look forward to seeing Governor Paterson sign this bill into law and getting the contracts out to bid - and people to work - so we can continue to move the water tunnel project forward."
