MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING THE OPERATING AUTHORITY OF TWO UNSUBSIDIZED BUS SERVICES

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The final bill before me today is Introductory Number 99, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Member Comrie.  Introductory Number 99 authorizes the Department of Transportation to extend the expiration date of the operating authority of two unsubsidized bus services: one which operates between Manhattan and LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports and one which operates between Williamsburg and Borough Park in Brooklyn.

“The Department of Transportation, as authorized by the Council in 2007, is currently awaiting responses to requests for proposals to solicit competitive bids from companies who wish to operate these services in the future.  This competitive process will result in the best possible service on these two well-traveled routes.  In order to ensure that there is no disruption in service while these proposals are reviewed and vendors are selected, Introductory Number 99 will allow for the extension of the current franchises for these services until June 30, 2011.

“I would like to thank Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff and my Office of City Legislative Affairs for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation.”
