STATEMENT OF MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON APPOINTMENT OF SHARON GREENBERGER AS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER AT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

"With nearly four more years still ahead of us, I've asked heads of City agencies to think boldly about changes that can help us extend the gains we've made and take our work to the next level.  One of the answers I received from Joel Klein was to suggest that Sharon Greenberger, who has built a truly outstanding record of accomplishment at the School Construction Authority, join the Department of Education in a senior leadership capacity.

"As the President of SCA for the past 4 years, Sharon and her team have implemented a $13 billion capital plan, the largest in the city's history, created over 55,000 new classroom seats and 83 new school buildings, and completed thousands of individual school improvement projects.  Sharon made these achievements possible by streamlining the school construction process, saving taxpayers significant money and increasing school capacity in all five boroughs. This September, SCA will open 25 new schools, and now we are thrilled that Sharon will be putting her talents to work even more directly on behalf of students.

"Sharon brings both an intimate knowledge of our innovative education agenda and an old-fashioned ability to roll up her sleeves and get the work done.  As Chief Operating Officer, Sharon will manage the day-to-day operations of the department and coordinate work among divisions, strengthening our ability to serve our 1.1 million school children. We have made huge strides in turning around a once-broken school system, and now Sharon will help us take the next big steps forward.

"Sharon is the longest-serving President in the history of the SCA, and I want to thank her for taking on this new challenge, as well as Lorraine Grillo, SCA's current Executive Director, who will become Acting President while we identify a replacement."
