STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE RELEASE OF COMMON CORE STANDARDS

"The release this morning of Common Core state standards by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers - one day after the announcement of the historic gains in New York City's graduation rate - provides a tremendous opportunity to align American education standards with those of the highest achieving countries around the world.

"The Common Core standards lay out rigorous expectations for students, from kindergarten through the 12th grade, and they provide a clear and useful roadmap that will help teachers to plan their curriculum, instruction, and assessments. We support the work of New York State to adopt the standards with minimal changes and to build new, stronger assessments that measure the kind of higher order skills that our students need to thrive in college and their careers."
