Blood Drive Scheduled to Address Critical Blood Shortage Due to Last Week's Winter Storm

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn today donated blood to the New York Blood Center as part of an Office of the Mayor/City Council Blood Drive held today in the Blue Room at City Hall following a shortage of blood donations resulting from last week's snow storm.

This blood drive was scheduled on short notice because the recent snow storm virtually shut down collections at many New York Blood Center locations and prevented some 1,500 donations from being made.  As a result, there is a critical shortage of blood in our area.

New York Blood Center is one of the nation's largest non-profit, community-based blood centers. It has been providing safe, adequate and reliable blood supply to almost 200 hospitals, serving 20 million people, in greater New York since 1964. New Yorkers who would like to donate blood to the New York Blood Center should call 311 or 1-800-933-BLOOD.
