STATEMENTS OF MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND SPEAKER QUINN ON BREAKTHROUGH AGREEMENT TO PRESERVE NORTHERN IRELAND'S POWER-SHARING GOVERNMENT

Statement of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

"This is a great triumph of faith - faith in a shared future for all the people of Northern Ireland, and faith in the peace and prosperity that the Good Friday Agreement has brought. Many elected and civic leaders, over the span of many years and on both sides of the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, helped lay the groundwork for this critically important breakthrough, and they deserve enormous credit. I especially want to thank and congratulate Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Taoiseach Brian Cowen, First Minister Peter Robinson, and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness for their determined efforts to achieve this historic breakthrough. While hard work remains to ensure the agreement is fully implemented, it will make this year's St. Patrick's Day celebrations especially joyous for all of Irish America, and particularly Irish New Yorkers."

Statement of City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn

"Today marks an historic and momentous turning point for the people of Northern Ireland. We in the United States, who have been firm supporters of the peace process, are delighted to celebrate today's agreement. The transfer of policing and justice powers from London to Belfast will create peace and stability that lasts and will form a critical groundwork for a prosperous future in Northern Ireland. It is my privilege to salute and thank Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Taoiseach Brian Cowen, First Minister Peter Robinson, and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness on their triumphant efforts and thank all the peacemakers responsible for reaching this consensus. Our future successes are mutually dependant on one another. New Yorkers have always shared a special relationship with the people of Northern Ireland. Today, they find hope and inspiration in the perseverance that has brought us to this milestone in the North."
