MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION INCREASING FINES FOR LEAVING A VEHICLE UNATTENDED WITHOUT LOCKING THE IGNITION OR REMOVING THE KEY

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The final bill before me today is Introductory Number 947-A, sponsored by Council Members Crowley, Brewer, Comrie, Gennaro, Gonzalez, Koppell, Liu, Nelson, Stewart, Vann, Weprin, Gerson, Jackson, White, Eugene and Recchia.  Introductory Number 947-A increases the fine for leaving a vehicle unattended without locking the ignition or removing the key.  The bill also eliminates the three-minute grace period for someone committing this irresponsible act.

"The message behind this legislation is simple: if you're getting out of your car - for any amount of time - take your keys with you.  Leaving your vehicle unattended for a few short moments may seem like a harmless way to save time, but it has the potential to harm life and property.  By increasing the fine for this offense, we can deter drivers from making a careless mistake and inviting the theft or misuse of their vehicle.

"I would like to thank Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and his staff for their work on this bill, as well as the City Council for approving this piece of legislation."
