STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON ARREST MADE IN THE SADIE MITCHELL HOMICIDE CASE

"As I said yesterday, the death of 92-year-old Sadie Mitchell in the Bronx is a heartbreaking tragedy. But today we had a small bit of good news when our Police Department made an arrest in the case thanks to investments we've made in crime-fighting technology.

"Through a dogged investigation, detectives were able to learn the nickname - but just the nickname - of a suspect. They entered that nickname into a database in our Real Time Crime Center at One Police Plaza, the database led them to a suspect, and they were quickly able to effect an arrest today.

"I've often said that there's no substitute for boots on the ground when it comes to keeping our City safe, and no factor has contributed more to our continually-falling crime rate falling than the men and women of the NYPD. But the people of New York City have reached into their pockets to build some of the best tools anywhere to fight crime, and today's developments are yet another example of the dividends those investments pay."
