STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON DIWALI

"Today marks the largest day of celebration for those of many faiths, as tens of thousands of New Yorkers will literally light up parts of the city in celebration of Diwali.  The festival of lights, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil, is an event we can all appreciate, and this year we have something extra to celebrate as President Obama became the first U.S. President to personally observe the holiday at a ceremony in the White House.  Our Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities, and all South Asians who are celebrating Diwali, are growing parts of the diverse fabric that makes New York the greatest city in the world.  On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all that are lighting diyas and exchanging sweets for the holiday."
