MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REQUIRING ANNUAL REPORT TO THE METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY ON INCREASES IN ENROLLMENT AT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 951-A, sponsored by Council Members Ignizio, Brewer, Comrie, Fidler, Gonzalez, Jackson, James, Liu, Palma, Vacca, White, Felder, Mitchell and Weprin.  Introductory Number 951-A requires the Department of Education to annually report to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on increases in its enrollment.

"Introductory Number 951-A requires the DOE to provide the MTA with data on the zip codes of students enrolled at new schools and schools that have seen increases in enrollment of two-hundred students or more.  With this information the MTA can more appropriately determine levels of service.

"I would like to thank Chancellor Joel Klein and his staff for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
