STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON STATE SENATE PASSAGE OF SCHOOL GOVERNANCE LEGISLATION

"The State Senate today took a major step that will benefit millions of public school children for years to come: it preserved a system of clear accountability for our schools that has produced clear and dramatic results for our students. With the governance question resolved, we can now move full steam ahead with efforts to ensure that this school year is marked by more great progress. I am grateful for Governor Paterson's support, and for the legislative leaders who refused to let politics stand in the way of progress, particularly Assembly Speaker Silver, Assembly Minority Leader Kolb and Education Chair Nolan, Senate Democratic Conference Leader Sampson, Minority Leader Skelos, President Smith and Majority Leader Espada. I would also like to thank Senators Padavan and Squadron for sponsoring this legislation and helping to assure its passage."
