FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR- 331-09 July 17, 2009 MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION RENAMING 41 THOROUGHFARES AND PUBLIC PLACES Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws “The final bill before me today is Introductory Number 1033, sponsored by Speaker Quinn and Council Members Arroyo, Barron, Comrie, Crowley, de Blasio, Dickens, Gentile, Gerson, Martinez, Mitchell, Recchia, Rivera, Sanders, Sears, Ulrich and Weprin. Introductory Number 1033 renames 41 thoroughfares and public places throughout the City. The first names I will read are streets named in honor of Police and Fire Department personnel who died in the line of duty in service to our City or country. Police Officer Deon Taylor Way The Bronx Police Officer Gerard L. Carter Avenue Staten Island Firefighter Bobby Beddia Way Manhattan NYPD Sgt. Ned Thompson Way Staten Island The second set of names represent individuals or entities that are being honored for their lifetime accomplishments, and while it is not possible to describe the reason each individual or entity is deserving of a street name change, each Council Member who submitted a name presented a detailed justification for this honor.
