MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING OPERATING AUTHORITY FOR TWO PRIVATE BUS SERVICES
Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
“The eighth bill before me is Introductory Number 979, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Katz, Comrie, Felder, Sears, Stewart and White. Introductory Number 979 authorizes the Department of Transportation to extend the expiration date of the operating authority of two unsubsidized bus services: one which operates between Manhattan and LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports and one which operates between Williamsburg and Borough Park in Brooklyn.
“The Department of Transportation, as authorized by the Council in 2006, is currently finalizing requests for proposals to solicit competitive bids from companies who wish to operate these services in the future. This competitive process will result in the best possible service on these well-traveled routes. In order to ensure that there is no disruption in service while these requests are finalized and bids are reviewed, Introductory Number 979 will allow for the extension of the current franchises for these services until June 30, 2010.
“I would like to thank Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff for their work on this bill. I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation.”
