MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REQUIRING THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION TO POST CENSUS AND SECURITY DATA REGARDING ADOLESCENT INMATES ONLINE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The second bill before me today is Introductory Number 937-A, sponsored by Council Members James, Gonzalez, Martinez, Comrie, Dickens, Fidler, Foster, Mark-Viverito, Palma, Sanders, White, Seabrook, Eugene, Gioia, Gennaro, Liu and Jackson.  Introductory Number 937-A requires the Department of Correction to post on its web site census and security data regarding adolescent inmates in City jails.

"In recent years the City's jails have become not only the safest in the history of the Department but also the safest large City jails in the nation.  The Department of Correction has a record of transparency in reporting extensive data through the Mayor's Management Report and on its web site.  Enactment of this legislation will lead to the submission of even more data to the Council and the public regarding City jails and adolescents in the Department's custody, thus maintaining the agency's practice of openness.

"I would like to thank Commissioner Marty Horn and his staff at the Department of Correction for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
