MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING ALTERNATE SIDE OF THE STREET PARKING REGULATIONS DURING SNOWSTORMS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The fourth bill before me today is Introductory Number 895, sponsored by Council Members Baez, Monserrate, Arroyo, Dickens, Foster, Gonzalez, James, Martinez, Mealy, Nelson, Palma, Seabrook, Weprin, White, Sanders, Avella, Gerson, Jackson, Liu, Fidler, Vacca, Gentile and Felder.  Introductory Number 895 temporarily suspends alternate side of the street parking regulations during snowstorms.

"Introductory Number 895 suspends alternate side of the street parking regulations during any snowfall that causes the Department of Sanitation to suspend its street sweeping operations.  After twenty-four hours the City may reinstitute alternate side of the street parking regulations for the purposes of curbside snow removal.

"Introductory Number 895 strikes a reasonable balance between needless inconvenience for the City's motorists and the City's mission to keep the streets clean and safe.

"I would like to thank Department of Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty and his staff for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation.
