STATEMENTS BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND SANITATION COMMISSIONER JOHN J. DOHERTY ON THE DEATH OF SANITATION WORKER NELSON DIAZ

Statement from Mayor Bloomberg

"This morning we received sad news about Nelson Diaz, a 23-year veteran of our Sanitation Department. While working his route in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, he collapsed and was taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, where he passed away. Sanitation Worker Diaz was respected by his colleagues for his dedication and devotion to duty. I spoke to his wife Ada this morning and expressed my heartfelt condolences to her and her children, Nelson Jr. and Omar, while also expressing our gratitude for his many years of service.  We have lost one of the unsung heroes of our City, who work tirelessly to make New York a better place for the rest of us."

Statement from Commissioner Doherty

"Sanitation Worker Nelson Diaz will be missed by his colleagues and friends at Bronx District 4. He was a hard-working and well-liked employee who cared for his City, for the neighborhood he served and for his loving family. His sudden loss is a blow to New York's Strongest."
