MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION AUTHORIZING DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST LICENSED ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS AND WEB SITE REPORTING OF CONSTRUCTION SITE INJURIES AND FATALITIES BY THE BUILDINGS DEPARTMENT

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Proposed Local Laws

"The first two of four bills before me today address intergovernmental coordination and transparency at the Buildings Department and represent only the beginning of our broader effort to reform the Department and strengthen oversight and enforcement of the construction industry. We detailed our strategy for doing that during our June 4th construction site safety announcement with Speaker Quinn and industry leaders.

"Introductory Number 511-A, sponsored by Council Members James, Fidler, Gentile, Mendez, Nelson, Palma, Vacca, Gerson, de Blasio, White, Oddo, Dickens, Garodnick, Monserrate and Sears requires the Buildings Department to notify the State Department of Education of disciplinary action against licensed architects and engineers.

"This legislation will help foster greater cooperation with the State and enable them to take steps to suspend or revoke the license of the professionals who have been disciplined by the City.

"Introductory Number 754-A, sponsored by Council Members Dilan, Brewer, Comrie, Felder, Fidler, Gentile, James, Koppell, Liu, Martinez, McMahon, Palma, Recchia, Stewart, Vacca, Monserrate, White, Garodnick, Gerson, Sears, Oddo and the Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum requires the Buildings Department to report on its web site information on injuries and fatalities at construction sites.

"This monthly report will be categorized by the type of construction activity and will provide the Department with the ability to identify possible trends and potential areas of concern.

"I would like to thank Acting Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri and his staff for their work on these two bills.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
