STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON COUNCIL PASSAGE OF NEW FIRE CODE FOR NEW YORK CITY

"The City Council today adopted a new Fire Code, the first comprehensive revision of the Fire Code since 1913, which will make this City safer for both New Yorkers and the firefighters that protect us. The Fire Code governs the use of building safety systems like sprinkler systems and extinguishers, the permit and inspection process, fire-detection and extinguishing systems, and emergency preparedness and planning. The new 645-page code, which adopts national standards, reflects lessons learned from past fires and is integrated and cross-referenced with the new Building Code, also recently adopted by the Council. Together, the new Fire and Building Codes will improve safety while also making it easier for construction professionals, designers, property owners, businesses, and others to work here more efficiently and understand their obligations under the law. I want to thank Speaker Quinn, Fire and Criminal Justice Services Committee Chair Miguel Martinez and former Chair Yvette Clarke for their leadership and hard work on this impressive achievement. I also commend the members of the Fire Department, both uniform and civilian, that worked for countless hours over four years on this landmark document."
