STATEMENT BY MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON EXPANSION OF NEW YORK CITY’S CLEAN ENERGY SUPPLY PROPOSED BY US POWER GENERATING COMPANY

"Developing a clean and reliable supply of energy is one of the key goals of PlaNYC, and investments in new power plants that are more efficient and far less polluting than the older ones New York City currently relies on can help us achieve it. US Power Generating Company has proposed to invest $100 million in additional clean energy capacity in Sunset Park, and the City is thoroughly reviewing it to make sure it positively impacts the area and helps the City meet its sustainability goals. USPowerGen has committed to ensuring that the project has a net reduction in carbon and air pollution emissions locally and citywide, and it has also committed to working closely with the local community to understand and address any concerns about the proposal.

"If USPowerGen's commitments are demonstrated conclusively and guaranteed through binding agreements, this is a proposal the City could and should support, and it could serve as a prime example of an innovative measure that promotes both environmental sustainability and economic development. As our City grows, it's up to us to find ways to ensure that the needs of our communities, our environment and our economy are addressed if we are to achieve our pursuit of a greener, greater New York."
