STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON OVERWHELMING PASSAGE BY STATE SENATE OF LEGISLATION ALLOWING A MARINE TRANSFER STATION TO BE SITED ON THE GANSEVOORT PENINSULA

"The Senate has shown tremendous leadership today by passing legislation, 53-8, that will allow for a marine transfer station on Gansevoort Peninsula - and for our Solid Waste Management Plan to proceed. Today’s Senate vote echoes the vote of the City Council that overwhelmingly passed the landmark Plan last year. I urge the Assembly to take immediate action, so that we can begin to take waste out of overburdened neighborhoods before the end of the legislative session. By joining the Senate, the City Council and the State Department of Environmental Conservation in supporting this plan, the Assembly can ensure that no community is unfairly burdened with another community’s waste."
