STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON RESOLUTION AND HOME RULE MESSAGE PASSED BY CITY COUNCIL CALLING ON STATE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE MARINE TRANSFER STATION AT THE GANSEVOORT PENINSULA

“The City Council has again spoken on the need for the State Legislature to amend the Hudson River Park Act to authorize a marine transfer station and environmental education center on the Gansevoort peninsula. Today’s resolution and the home rule message, overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 48-3, reinforce the call for each borough to handle its fair share of waste and recyclables. That call was first heard when the Council passed the landmark Solid Waste Management Plan last year. As today’s resolution notes, the Solid Waste Management Plan we adopted was the result of extensive collaboration between our Administration, the Council and other public and private stakeholders in all five boroughs. The City Council correctly sees this not as a neighborhood issue, but an issue that affects every community across the City.  Now it is time for the State Legislature to follow the Council’s lead and allow our plan to move ahead so that no community is unfairly burdened with another community’s waste.”
