MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION RENAMING 51 STREETS AND PUBLIC PLACES

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The final bill first before me today is Introductory Number 556-A, sponsored by Council Members Arroyo, Avella, Baez, Barron, Brewer, de Blasio, Comrie, Dickens, Dilan, Foster, Gentile, Gioia, Gonzalez, Jackson, James, Mark-Viverito, McMahon, Mendez, Recchia, Reyna, Rivera, Sanders, Sears, Vacca, Vann, Weprin, White, Yassky and Palma.

“Introductory Number 556-A renames 51 thoroughfares and public places throughout the City.  The first two names I will read are streets named in honor of people who died on September 11, 2001, and although this is a modest gesture, this local law demonstrates the City’s commitment to always remember those who perished that day.  I will now read those two names:

Patrick Sullivan 9-11 Memorial Way - Brooklyn
Daniela R. Notaro Way  -  Staten Island

The remaining 49 names represent individuals or entities that are being honored for their lifetime accomplishments, and while it is not possible to describe the reason each individual or entity is deserving of a street name change, each Council Member who submitted a name presented a detailed justification for this honor.
