MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION IMPROVING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN FIRE AND BUILDINGS DEPARTMENTS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The bill before me today is Introductory Number 553-A, sponsored by Speaker Quinn and Council Members Martinez, Dilan, Brewer, Fidler, Gentile, Monserrate, Seabrook, Vacca, Liu, Recchia, Garodnick, Felder, Oddo and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.  Introductory Number 553-A requires the Buildings Department to notify the Fire Department after it issues a permit that would result in a new or amended certificate of occupancy or change the use of the premises.

"Our Administration has already launched several initiatives to improve coordination between the Buildings and Fire Departments, including the Digital Blueprint project. Introductory Number 553-A will further improve communication and the sharing of data by providing firefighters, prior to responding to an emergency, with the information necessary to determine if significant changes were made to a building. This bill will ensure that the brave men and women of the Fire Department will be thoroughly armed with accurate building information, which will improve public safety throughout our City.

"I would like to thank Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster and all of their staff for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the City Council for their input and support on this bill."
