MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION ESTABLISHING GREATER PARITY FOR CITY BENEFITS AND SERVICES
Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Law
“The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 501-A, and is sponsored by Speaker Quinn and Council Members Baez, Mendez, de Blasio, Avella, Brewer, Dickens, James, Katz, Koppell, Lappin, Liu, Mark-Viverito, Palma, Weprin, Gerson, Garodnick, Gonzalez, White, Sears, Monserrate and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.
“Introductory Number 501-A requires that access to City benefits and services be made available to married couples and domestic partners on an equal basis to the maximum extent allowed by State and federal law and also provides that domestic partners applying for such benefits or services need only provide proof of their relationship by providing their certificate of domestic partnership registration, similar to how married couples need only present a marriage license.
“This Administration has a longstanding commitment to extending City benefits and services on an equal basis to married couples and domestic partners and this bill will strengthen the existing City laws and policies protecting the interests of all domestic partners, many of whom may be of the same sex.
“I would like to thank Speaker Quinn and the Council, as well as the Law Department, for their work on this bill.”
