FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR- 109-06 April 10, 2006 MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EFFECTUATING COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY AND UFA Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws "The first bill before me is Introductory Number 244, sponsored at the request of our Administration by Council Members Addabbo, Nelson, Seabrook and Stewart. Intro. 244 amends the terms of employment for members of the Fire Department who formerly served as police officers. "This bill is the legislative change needed to effectuate the contract ratified by the Uniformed Firefighters Association. As part of the negotiated settlement between the City and the UFA, the parties agreed to support legislation that would require that police officers who join the FDNY be hired at the entry level hiring rate. Upon appointment to the FDNY, these employees would be considered newly appointed employees for purposes of salary, eligibility for promotion and all other economic benefits, other than retirement and pension benefits. "I would like to thank Jim Hanley, Commissioner of the Office of Labor Relations, and the City Council for their efforts on this legislation."
