MAYOR BLOOMBERG APPOINTS EDWARD SKYLER AS DEPUTY MAYOR FOR ADMINISTRATION

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced today that Edward Skyler has been appointed the Deputy Mayor for Administration.  In this capacity, Skyler will assist the Mayor in managing the Police Department, Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, Office of Management and Budget, Office of Labor Relations and the Law Department.  In addition, Skyler will directly oversee the Department of Sanitation, Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Office of Contract Services, the Criminal Justice Coordinator, Office of Midtown Enforcement, Business Integrity Commission, Pensions, Public Finance and Communications.  Skyler currently serves as the Mayor’s Communications Director and has worked in the Bloomberg Administration since its inception in January, 2002.

“As a senior member of my administration’s management team, Ed Skyler has worked tirelessly and served the City well over the last four years,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “He has been a trusted advisor who has tremendous knowledge of and experience working with City agencies. I know he will excel in this new position.”

“Mayor Bloomberg has given me great opportunities to serve New York City and I am eager to take on this latest challenge,” Skyler said. “New York has thrived under the Mayor’s leadership and I am proud to remain on his team.”

As the Communications Director and Press Secretary, Skyler has been an advisor to the Mayor, served as the administration’s chief spokesman and overseen the Mayor’s Press, Speechwriting, Research and Photo Offices.  Skyler directed the Mayor’s daily communications operations and worked to ensure an open dialogue between the public information offices at City agencies and the news media. Skyler also has launched projects to increase the City’s emergency communications capabilities. Most notably, the City entered into an agreement with the area’s broadcast television and radio stations to pre-empt programming to disseminate vital information to the public in an emergency.

Skyler worked at the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation from 1995 to 1999, where he served as Deputy Chief of Staff and as the Public Information Director.  He then was appointed a Deputy Press Secretary to Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.  In 2000, he left the Mayor’s Office to work in the Corporate Communications group of Bloomberg LP and, in 2001, he joined Bloomberg for Mayor as the campaign’s Press Secretary.  Skyler served in that position through the transition during which time he was appointed Press Secretary to the incoming Mayor.

Born and raised in New York City, Skyler is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Fordham University School of Law.  He is a member of the New York State Bar.
