MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION INCREASING PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTIONS FOR VETERANS

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 764-A, sponsored by Speaker Miller and Council Members Weprin, Monserrate, Boyland, Clarke, Comrie, Fidler, Gentile, Gonzalez, James, Liu, McMahon, Nelson, Recchia, Seabrook, Sears, Stewart, Vann, Lanza, Jackson, Katz and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.  This bill increases the maximum property tax exemption to which various classes of veterans are entitled.

“New York State law authorizes municipalities to grant property tax exemptions – up to certain amounts – for veterans who served during periods of war, who served in combat zones, or who have a disability as a result of combat.  Intro. 764-A increases the maximum amount of exemption allowed for each of these classes.

“I would like to thank the Department of Finance, the Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs, and the City Council for their work on this bill

“I will now turn to the bills’ sponsors and to any other elected officials wishing to speak on this matter.”
