MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION ESTABLISHING CHILD FATALITY REVIEW COMMITTEE
Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
"The next bill before me is Introductory Number 480-A, sponsored by Council Members Quinn, de Blasio, Fidler, Martinez, Palma, Recchia, Reyna, Boyland, Brewer, Clarke, Comrie, Foster, Gennaro, Gerson, Gonzalez, Jackson, James, Katz, Koppell, Liu, Nelson, Rivera, Sanders, Seabrook, Vann, Weprin, Sears and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.
"Introductory Number 480-A establishes a child fatality review advisory team to review the death of any child under the age of 13 whose death is unanticipated, the result of trauma, suspicious circumstances or otherwise unexplained. The advisory team will be chaired by the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and will consist of representatives of the Administration for Children's Services, the Police Department, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Department of Education and the New York State Office of Child and Family Services. In addition, the team will include four appointed members from the medical and child advocacy communities.
"This independent, comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach will result in tangible recommendations for the prevention of childhood fatalities.
"I would like to thank the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Administration for Children's Services, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Police Department and the City Council for their hard work on this legislation."
