MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION RENAMING JAMAICA AVENUE JERICHO TURNPIKE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 304-A, sponsored by Council Member Weprin.  This bill would rename a portion of Jamaica Avenue in the Borough of Queens as Jericho Turnpike and change the map of the City of New York to reflect the new name.

“The north side of this stretch of road is located in New York City and is called Jamaica Avenue.  The south side of the road is located in Nassau County and is called Jericho Turnpike.

“The purpose of the name change is to end the confusion that has existed since 1920 when the north side of Jericho Turnpike was renamed Jamaica Avenue, thus creating the only street in New York State that is divided down the centerline by two names.

“This bill takes effect ninety days after its enactment to allow for sufficient notification to all parties involved and to allow for a smooth transition.  I would like to thank the City Council for advancing this idea and for their work in shepherding it through the legislative process.”
