MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION INCREASING GUN LICENSE FEES

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Law

"Finally, the last two bills before me are Introductory Number 385 and Introductory Number 386, sponsored at the request of the Administration by the Chair of the Committee on Finance, Council Member David Weprin, along with Council Members Filder, Stewart, Dilan, Jennings and Reyna.

"Introductory Number 385 will increase pistol license fees from $170 to $340 and extend the term of licenses from two to three years.  Additionally, the long gun permit fee will increase from $55 to $140.  This will also help keep dangerous firearms off the streets of New York.

"Under Introductory Number 386, the fee paid by property owners for various applications for variances, special permits, appeals and amendments under the jurisdiction of the Board of Standards Appeals will be increased by 25%.  This fee increase, however, will not affect variance applications for one- and two- family homes or administrative appeals for one-, two- and three- family homes.

"Collectively, the fee increases contemplated by Introductory Number 385 and Introductory Number 386 are necessary to deliver more efficient administrative services to New Yorkers and will generate approximately $1.5 million in revenue through fiscal year 2008.

"I would like to thank New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and his staff for their assistant on Introductory Number 385.  I would like to thank the staff of the Board of Standards and Appeals for their work on Introductory Number 386.  I also would like to acknowledge Council Member Weprin along with the other Council Members that served as co-sponsors on these bills."
