MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION IMPROVING FIRE CODE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Law

"The next two bills before me concern the City's efforts to update the New York City Fire Code. The first bill, Introductory Number 414, which was sponsored at my request by Council Members Clarke, Comrie, Jennings and Stewart, addresses certain inconsistencies and overlaps that currently exist between the New York City Building and Fire Codes.  The bill repeals outdated provisions of the New York City Fire Code concerning the use of flammable liquids in dry cleaning and dry dyeing establishments, the use of which is no longer permitted under the Building Code.  The conflicting and overlapping provisions of the Fire Code need to be eliminated to promote compliance and to lessen the uncertainty and confusion for those businesses or persons that must abide by these regulations.

"The second bill, Introductory Number 415, which was sponsored at my request by Council Members Clarke, Comrie, Jennings, Stewart and Weprin, amends the New York City Fire Code by adding a new provision that raises the threshold quantity of liquefied carbon dioxide that may be stored without a permit.  The amendment allows for the use of such liquefied gas, which is commonly used in restaurants for beverage carbonation, at a level generally allowed in other jurisdictions.  This bill relieves small businesses such as bars and restaurants from the current permit and fee requirements and was proposed in light of technological improvements."
