New York City Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Ceasefire of the Korean War at the Veterans' Day Parade

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the appointment of Clarice Joynes as the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs. Clarice Joynes will be the first woman appointed as Director of Veterans’ Affairs and will advise the Mayor on issues and projects impacting on the veterans’ community, and offer information and referrals for veterans and members of the military who may require assistance.

“Clarice Joynes has the life and work experience to lead the Veterans’ Affairs Office,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “Ms. Joynes is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and has worked at the Mayor’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs under two former Directors including the late Michael Handy.  I am confident that Clarice will work tirelessly to meet the needs of the New York City veteran and military community.”

Clarice Joynes entered the United States Marine Corps in 1981 and served her enlistment at Headquarters Battery, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.   She has served New York City since 1988 and as Director she will oversee the needs of over 300,000 veterans in New York City.  Clarice earned a B.A. in American History at the City University of New York, Queens College.

Mayor Bloomberg also celebrated Veterans’ Day by commemorating the 50th anniversary of the ceasefire of the Korean War today by marching in the 85th Annual Veterans’ Day Parade.

“We must remember the service and sacrifice of the many New Yorkers who have served and are currently serving and protecting our nation,” said Mayor Bloomberg.  “The motto ‘Freedom Is Not Free’ is closely associated with the Korean War and still rings true today.”
