MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG PRESENTS KEY TO THE CITY TO YANKEE ACE ROGER CLEMENS

Winner of 300 Games and Six Cy Young Awards Honored at City Hall

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today presented the key to the City to New York Yankee Great Roger Clemens in honor of his 300th career victory at Yankee Stadium on Friday, June 13th 2003.  The ceremony was held in the Blue Room at City Hall.

“Congratulations to ‘The Rocket’ on his 300th career victory,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Roger Clemens is one of Baseball greatest pitchers and another in a long line of famous Bostonians who moved to New York to achieve their greatest glory.  It’s a great honor to present the Key to the City to a future Hall of Famer, but as impressive as Roger’s exploits on the field are his commitment to philanthropy and the work he does to help young people across the country is even more inspiring.”

Roger Clemens joined Baseball elite group of 300 game winners on Friday June 13th, 2003 when the Yankees topped the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium five to two.  Besides being the 21st Major League pitcher to win 300 games, the Rocket is 3rd all-time in strikeouts and first among active players in wins, completes games, innings pitched, shutouts and strikeouts.  He started his career in 1984 in Boston and after a stint in Toronto, joined the New York Yankees in 1999 and has won two world Championships in New York.  In 1999, Clemens was named to the All Century Team. Clemens is an eight-time All Star, was the American League MVP in 1986 and has pitched 102 games where he struck out more than ten batters, including two 20-strikeout games.  Clemens was a two time All American at the University of Texas and was the winning pitcher in the championship game of the 1983 College World Series.

Roger and Debbie Clemens started the Roger Clemens Foundation in 1992.  The Foundation is dedicated to supporting educational, charitable, literary, scientific and religious activities for children, with a special emphasis on underprivileged and at-risk children, and children with special needs.  Among organizations the Foundation supports are the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Variety Clubs International, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Make A Wish Foundation, The Jimmy Fund, Sunshine Kids, Periwinkle Foundation, and the National Paralysis Foundation.  Roger has been married to Debbie Clemens since 1984; they have four children: Koby, Kory, Kacy and Kody and live in Houston Texas.
