STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE DEATH OF SENATOR DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN

“Daniel Patrick Moynihan left his mark on public policy ranging from international diplomacy to the fight against poverty.  He also reminded us that part of what makes us New Yorkers is our ability to dream of big projects and then carry them out.  He often said that New York had to get back its sense of the greatness of public works. And perhaps his most enduring legacy to us will be two great projects that will go on in his spirit and, perhaps, his name.

“One will be Governors Island, which we will develop as a beautiful academic campus for the City University of New York.  That will be a fitting tribute to a man who was a great teacher as well as a great Senator.  And the other will be the new Penn Station, which will be a spectacular entryway to the greatest city in the world.  Moynihan was once asked what New York City would look like in 100 years.  His answer: ‘Different, better, magnificent.’

“This city is different, better, magnificent because of his life’s work.  In this historic period of rebuilding and renewal, we can honor Senator Moynihan’s memory by making his prediction of our great future come true.”
