MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LAW NAMING 97 STREETS AFTER VICTIMS OF SEPTEMBER 11TH.
Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
"The next bill before today Introductory Number 318-A, which will rename various public thoroughfares and public places throughout the city after ninety-seven firefighters, police officers and civilians who died on September 11, 2001.
"In spite of the heroic efforts of New York City's Fire Department, EMTs, Police Department, and hundreds of civilians, more than 2,800 people were killed when the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists and destroyed on September 11, 2001. Included among the casualties were firefighters, police officers, emergency service personnel and civilians on the ground. All the people who lost their lives were heroes as well as victims. Today we both celebrate their lives and mourn their passing by renaming streets in their memory.
"Even though this is a modest gesture when compared to their great sacrifice, it reaffirms our commitment that the City will never forget those who perished that day."
